Albert “Preston” Hobbs, age 87, beloved husband of Helen “Irene” Murphy Hobbs, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 1, 2024, in La Mesa, California. He was born in Wolfe County, Kentucky, on June 26, 1937, to the late Finley Carl Hobbs and the late Victoria Watkins Hobbs. Al was always proud to say that he was born in a log cabin in a holler in Kentucky much like Abraham Lincoln. Times were hard and like most children of the day, he was expected to work on the farm with the family. Al learned at a young age to plow the field with a mule, milk the cows, feed the stock, and butcher the hogs. He raised tobacco to buy his first car. By the age of 12, Al was delivering furniture and by the age of 14, he was working in the oil fields. Despite not serving an apprenticeship, he became a union journeyman carpenter and by the time he was 26 he was superintendent for a framing contractor. After just seven years, Al obtained his general contractor’s license and founded Hobbs Construction Corporation. Later he formed Conversions Unlimited and began converting buses into motorhomes. Outside of work, Al enjoyed restoring antique cars that included a Model A Ford, several Chevy Corvairs, a 1957 Thunderbird and several Chevy El Caminos. He also enjoyed water skiing and later in life, restoring antique clocks. Al loved life, working, and creating, but most of all, he loved people. He was a member of the Casa De Oro Bible Church in Spring Valley, California where he loved to go early on Sunday mornings to hear the choir practice. In addition to his parents, Al is preceded in death by his son, Dennis Hobbs; two brothers: William Carl Hobbs and Bert Hobbs; and two sisters: Cora Hobbs Hibbard and Ruth Hobbs Hoffman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Faye (Donald) Dezran of Hillsboro, OH; sisters-in-law: Pauline Hobbs of Lexington, KY and Phyllis Hobbs of Stanton, KY; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and too many friends to count. Graveside services, officiated by Bro. Johnny Hurt, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the F.C. Hobbs Family Cemetery in Rogers, Kentucky. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hearne Funeral Home of Stanton.
