Jeffrey Montfort Stiles, age 67 & a resident of Stanton. Passed away Thursday, December 3rd at his home. He was born April 30, 1953 in Louisville, the son of Sue Montfort Stiles and the late James O. Stiles, Sr. Jeff was a graduate of Ohio State University and the University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law. While in law school, Jeff met former Powell County Judge, Bill Patrick, who told him about the need for an attorney in his county. Upon graduation, Jeff traveled to Stanton & Clay City, liked what he saw, and never left. Jeff opened a private practice and in time served as Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Breathitt, Wolfe & Powell Counties; City Attorney of Clay City; Powell County Bank Attorney, among other positions. In 1990, Jeff was elected Powell County Attorney. He served four terms before retiring. He was named County Attorney of the Year in 1996. Jeff came out of retirement to serve for a time as Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Estill, Lee & Owsley Counties. Jeff was a former member of the Clay City Lions Club, and several other civic organizations. During the years his children attended, he was active in the Bowen Elementary PTO & was the chief dishwasher of their Fall Festivals for many years. Jeff was a passionate animal lover and a rescuer of strays. At one time he housed a menagerie of felines and canines. Jeff loved music. His musical tastes were broad and varied. The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Joan Jett, and Ralph Stanley to name a few. His playlists were interesting and appropriately titled: “Double Knee Replacement” ; “60’s Hits (Mostly Beatles)” and “Covid 19”. After decades of being a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, Jeff converted his support to the New England Patriots. When asked why he had switched his allegiance, he stated that after watching the Bengals lose for 50 years, he felt he had earned the right to watch a team win every once in awhile. He enjoyed traveling, eating shrimp from O’Steens in St. Augustine, FL; telling jokes that were only ever funny to him; and singing “Mac the Knife”, while dancing off beat. Jeff will be forever missed by his children: Jeffrey Alan Montfort Stiles (Shannon Drake), Lexington; Michael (Brittany) Denniston, Lexington; and Alexandra Stiles, Red River, NM ; his mother, Sue Stiles of Lexington and his beloved pets: Maddie, Frankie, Buster, Jesse & Rex. He is also survived by a brother, Jim Stiles; his Uncle & Aunt, Joe and Nancy Stiles; Aunt Dot Stiles, several cousins and a host of dear friends and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his father, James O. Stiles, an Uncle, Jack Stiles and his faithful companion and friend, his dog, Weezer. Private graveside services were held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Stonegate Cemetery with Steve Oliver, Mark Postallian, Bob Shinkle, Steve Pickett, Bill Crellin and Marty Denniston serving as pallbearers.
