With a passion for baseball, he earned a scholarship to Morehead State University, where he shone on the team as a skilled pitcher for the Eagles, all while pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Education. His dedication to learning didn’t stop there; he continued his academic journey, ultimately receiving a Master of Education from Eastern Kentucky University. During the 1970s and 1980s, he led the boys' basketball team, serving in both assistant and head coach roles, where he inspired many young athletes. His influence extended beyond basketball; as the Powell County Athletics Director for over a decade, Mike played a vital role in establishing the Pirate Football program, shaping the futures of countless student-athletes. His passion for golf was evident as he coached the boys' golf team from the mid-1970s until 1992, imparting his knowledge and skills to individual golfers through personalized lessons. A true outdoor enthusiast, Mike loved to bass fish and was an active member of the Red River Gorge Bass Club, participating in numerous competitions and relishing the thrill of the catch. In his free time, he explored his creative side through woodworking, skillfully crafting beautiful pieces of furniture that held stories of their own. Even in retirement, Mike’s dedication to education remained unwavering. He served as an instructional supervisor for the Powell County School District, continuing to mentor and inspire the next generation. Often found on the picturesque golf course, he cherished moments spent teaching his granddaughters and other young golfers, instilling in them a love for the game. Mike was not only a go-getter with a vibrant sense of humor but also a gifted storyteller who loved connecting with others. His generous spirit shone brightly through his charitable acts, and over the years, he committed himself to serving local churches. For many years, Mike taught the senior class at Stanton Presbyterian Church and held the position of deacon, later joining Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he continued to teach and serve.
