Nora Lee Walters, age 94, widow of Cecil “Pete” Walters, of Stanton, Kentucky passed into the arms of Jesus on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester. Nora Lee was born in Rosslyn, Kentucky on April 1, 1929, to the late Virgil and Maude Benningfield Martin. Nora Lee loved her family deeply. She was a faithful member of Stanton Christian Church since 1947, a lifetime member of the DAV and the VFW, a member of the American Legion and the Chairwoman assisting the Louisville DAR and Bowen Family Association of KY. Throughout the years she was active in the leadership of the 4-H Club of Powell County and Parent Teacher’s Association and she was appointed as a member of the Social Service Advisory Committee for eight years under both Governor Bert T. Combs and Governor Edward T. Breathitt. Nora Lee was the first woman appointed to the Stanton Municipal Housing Authority and was employed by the Cabinet for Human Resources. She was a member of the 83rd Infantry Division, WWII Auxiliary Association, the Kentucky Public Retirees, the National Button Society and a charter member and treasurer of the Powell County Association for Special Needs Children. Nora Lee was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution in Mt. Sterling, a charter member of the Red River Valley Chapter D.A.R. where she served as Regent, appointed by Gov. Wendell Ford as the first woman to serve on the local Board of Selective Service and commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. Nora Lee loved her community and faithfully remembered the Veterans by “ringing the bell” on the 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour each year and participated in placing American flags on Veteran’s graves at Stanton Cemetery. Along with her husband and parents, Nora Lee was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Alice Reed Vice; one brother, James Richard Martin; two sisters: Wilma Jane Martin Reed and Marietta Martin Stone. She is survived by two daughters: Eva June (Bobby) Friel of Louisville and C. Ann (H.K.) Cunningham of Stanton; two sisters Hilda Glenn of Saint Charles, Missouri and Wilda (H.T.) Derickson of Stanton and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue in Stanton. Funeral services officiated by Brother Greg Webb will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 18, 2023, at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Stanton Cemetery with Jason Friel, Anthony Ware, Chad Vice, Sanford Vice, J.R. Dakin, J.R. Butcher and Woody Clark serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Red River Valley Chapter D.A.R., Red River Historical Society and Stanton Christian Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hearne Funeral Home of Stanton.
